Bariblock® for the shielding of an X-ray tube for non-destructive radiographic testing

Bariblock® barytic concrete, thanks to its reduced thickness ensured by its high density (ρ=3,300 kg/m³), was chosen by an important company in the petrochemical sector to shield a 300 kV X-ray tube, used to perform non-destructive radiographic testing, at its plant in Cagliari, Italy.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BUNKER

The bunker covers an area of 77 m², is 5 m high and the 35 cm-thick walls allow personnel outside the bunker to work in complete safety, without compromising their activities.

THE TIMING

The Bariblock® team built a fully reinforced barytic concrete bunker in record time, just one week.

PREFABRICATED ELEMENTS

To carry out the work on time, it was decided to build precast elements entirely in barytic concrete:

  • 168 m² of twin walls;
  • 63 m² of predalles slabs;
  • 3 NPS BASIC beams supplied by Tecnostrutture S.r.l.

At site it was only required to:

  • Carry out tracing and position the anchoring reinforcements;
  • Position the prefabricated elements and any additional reinforcement;
  • Pour the barytic concrete mix.
