Shielding with Bariblock®15 blocks for the Ospedale dell’Angelo in Mestre – Italy

BARIBLOCK®15 barytic blocks were used to shield ionising radiation from the waste collection room of the Nuclear Medicine and Metabolic Radiotherapy Department of the Ospedale dell’Angelo in Mestre, Italy.

SHIELDING CHARACTERISTICS

To guarantee the safety of personnel working in the HUB laboratory, adjacent to the waste collection room of the Nuclear Medicine and Metabolic Radiotherapy, 150 m² of BARIBLOCK®15 barytic blocks were installed.

Thanks to the reduced thickness guaranteed by its high density (ρ=3.300 kg/m³), 2 side-by-side rows of BARIBLOCK®15 were sufficient for each wall.

BARIBLOCK®15 FEATURES

Made of high density barytic concrete, BARIBLOCK®15 blocks have dimensions of 17x20x15 cm (w x h x d) and a net dry density ≥ 3.300 kg/m³ (UNI EN 771-3).

The pointed wedge shape of BARIBLOCK® blocks guarantees greater penetration between the blocks on all four sides compared to rounded solutions. The wedge also acts as a guide for the positioning of neighbouring blocks, ensuring easier installation.

BARIBLOCK®15 INSTALLATION

For the installation of BARIBLOCK®15 blocks, barytic bedding mortar was used, which, due to its high specific weight, ensures the continuity of the shielding.
